It isn't too late to find these delicacies. Here are a few helpful hints:
Under Oak trees is probably the best place I have found these.
Also, under connifer trees, especially if an area was burned out the year prior. They love the rich soil. Morels love old established areas with little outside disturbance, usually heavy ground cover of decaying leaves. If that doesn't work, there is always your fresh produce market. Here is a recipe I enjoy using:
1 lb mushrooms, 1lb butter or margerine
6 eggs beat well
1/4 box saltine crackers, finely crushed
1 C flour
2t sea salt, 1 t pepper
Mushroom Preparation - Wash and cut fresh mushrooms into quarters, slicing long way. Soak in large bowl of salt water and soak in refrigerator for a couple hours. Remove and drain well. Heat 2 T butter in cast iron skillet. Dip dry mushroom in egg mix then roll in cracker, flour & Salt and pepper mixture. Place in well heated skillet and cook 5 minutes. Delicious!
